Lorne Michaels, Seth Myers on Politics & SNL (FishBowlNY)

... Eventually, the conversation turned to politics, and Lorne Michaels insisted, "We try very hard not to be partisan. Whoever you are we're against it." Seth Meyers said getting across a point of view is not a priority, "You try so hard to be funny, you just worry about that."

Michaels said that when Sarah Palin was on she was "incredibly gracious," "extremely likeable," and "clearly a star." In regards to those famous political sketches, he said, "We deal in the world of perception. It's not real."

If you're one of those people who thinks SNL's not as funny as it used to be, you're not alone. Michaels says, "[People say,] 'You know what the great period was?' It's almost always when they were in high school." He said that's the time when "people bond with the cast."

Gov. Paterson written off by experts, pols as he fends off rumors of sexual, political scandal (New York Daily News)

February 9th 2010

ALBANY - A chaotic Capitol plunged to new lows Monday as Gov. Paterson was forced to swat down "callous and sleazy" speculation he's quitting amid personal and political scandal.

The pushback capped a remarkable few days in which an apparently orchestrated rumor mill about the gov's drug use and womanizing reached a fever pitch, peaking with blogs claiming his resignation was imminent.

An increasingly beleaguered Paterson scrambled yesterday to pick up the pieces of his political world as it crumbled around him.

"For the last couple of weeks I have been the subject of what, even by Albany standards, has been a spate of outrageous rumors about me," Paterson told The Associated Press.

Dem Talking Points: We're Screwed! (TPM)

Democratic Party SymbolImage by dbking via Flickr
TalkingPointsMemo: New Senate Democratic talking points, distributed in response to last night's special election in Massachusetts show the party pre-emptively placing the blame for a lackluster agenda moving forward on Republicans, who Dems say they now need to pass legislation.

"Republicans have an obligation to the American people to join us in governing our nation through these difficult times and to help clean up the mess they left behind," reads the memo obtained by TPMDC. "It is mathematically impossible for Democrats to pass legislation on our own. Senate Republicans to come to the table (sic) with ideas for improving our nation and not obstructionist tactics."

Assault on reporter by Coakley aide won’t help her faltering campaign (TrueSlant.com)

Bookmark and Share

By John Kinsellagh

If this YouTube video goes viral, it could spell real trouble for the lethargic Coakley campaign. For the incident it depicts is rich with symbolism about the manner in which Martha Coakley has conducted her campaign for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. Since Coakley, as the Democrat in the race, feels entitled to the Senate seat, it is clear that she views earning the right to represent the voters as a nuisance that is beneath her. Not only has Coakley avoided retail campaigning by remaining utterly disengaged from the voters of Massachusetts, but her goons apparently are free to deal in a thuggish manner with pesky reporters attempting to ask her inconvenient questions.

And the reason for this inexcusable provocation? Weekly Standard reporter, John McCormack, wanted to ask Coakley why health care industry lobbyists were supporting her at the fundraiser.

Reid Apologizes for Racial Remarks About Obama (New York Times)

From YouTube, August 27, 2008: Senate majority leader Harry Reid explains why he is nominating Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee for President.

Published: January 9, 2010

WASHINGTON — Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, apologized on Saturday for saying that he believed Barack Obama could become the country’s first black president because he was “light-skinned” and had the advantage of carrying “no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

The apology was prompted by the release of a new book on the 2008 presidential campaign, which reported that Mr. Reid privately urged Mr. Obama to seek the presidency more than three years ago despite his limited experience and the historical obstacles to making a successful bid for the White House.

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words,” Mr. Reid said in a statement. “I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments.”

The New York Observer

In the paper today we talked to some publishing people about why more reporters out on the campaign trail aren't working on books about the election—and why the handful who are doing it think it's a good idea. One campaign book that has already bitten the dust is right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt's How Sarah Palin Won the Election ... and Saved America, which the literary agent Curtis Yates sent to publishers in New York last week.

When Media Mob reached Mr. Yates by phone on Monday, he'd already given up on trying to sell the book.

"The idea was to tell the story behind the effect that Sarah Palin has had on this election and how it is and why it is that she has basically turned the election around for McCain and why it is that she is resonating with so many people in the country," he said. "The intent was to finish the book by a week after the election, and to have it out before the inauguration."

The 2008 presidential campaign has been historic and gripping in a multitude of ways, and with the fast approach of Election Day, politics are seeping into many corners of popular culture. Comics are no exception, and while political themes in comics are nothing new, a number of publishers and creators have developed projects tied directly to this election season. Benefits for the comics industry include the publicity and sales that come from tapping into current widespread interest in the campaign—but the new batch of politically minded projects also demonstrates the various ways that the medium of comics can uniquely contribute to the political discourse.

"Within the comics right now, the character Savage Dragon is not the most popular guy on the planet," he says. "So if it turns out that the unthinkable happens and McCain gets in the White House, of course it will be Dragon’s fault entirely. Erik Larsen, creator of Image Comics' "The Savage Dragon," commenting on his potential culpability in the 2008 presidential election. Click HERE to Keep reading!

When Comics Attack!

'Tales from the Crypt's' Sarah Palin Cover

Published: 10/02/2008 08:40pm

Can anyone remember an election year in which presidential politics intruded any more obviously into the insular world of comic books than it has in 2008? Presidential (and now Vice-Presidential) candidates have increasingly graced the covers of comics and since IDW’s even-handed McCain and Obama biographical comics (see “IDW’s Comic Book Bios”), the depiction of these political figures has become increasingly controversial with Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon endorsing Obama (see “Endorsement Gets Noticed”), and the cover of Bluewater’s Hillary Clinton comic drawing criticism for its similarity to IDW’s McCain and Obama covers (see "Hillary Clinton Comic").

Now along comes news that Vice Presidential candidate and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will be depicted on the cover of half of the copies of Papercutz’ Tales from the Crypt #8, which ships to retailers later this month. Governor Palin is shown brandishing a hockey stick and asking, “Didn’t we get rid of you guys in the 1950s” as the traditional narrators of EC Horror comics, the Crypt Keeper, the Old Witch, and the Vault-Keeper, flee in panic.

The issue will include a special editorial by Cathy Gaines Mifsud, the daughter of William Gaines, the original publisher of EC Comics and Mad Magazine. Gaines Mifsud’s editorial links the cover image to the controversy surrounding Governor Palin’s queries (while Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska) to a librarian about the possibility of removing controversial books from the public library (no books were actually removed from the library, see “Palin Library Censorship Issue Raised”).
